When pushing hg commits across the gap to git, hg-git’s use of the extra header fields causes the hash produced by the commit to be different than it would have been if the commit had been originally made in a git repo. The reason this matters is that this causes repo histories created by hg-git to be incompatible with those made by tools \(e.g. git-remote-hg\) which reproduce the history without doing so.
Given that git-remote-hg is quazi official way of accessing hg from git, IMO it’s highly desirable for hg-git and git-remote-hg to be compatible. Clean hash matching is also the common-denominator for any analogous tool.
The dulwich docs warn against using this field, though I think for other reasons: [https://www.dulwich.io/docs/api/dulwich.objects.html#dulwich.objects.Commit.extra](https://www.dulwich.io/docs/api/dulwich.objects.html#dulwich.objects.Commit.extra)
Without knowing the full consequences of doing so, I propose using git notes for this purpose instead of extra-headers. AFAIK git notes do not affect the hash and so are a great alternative.
Additionally/alternatively, I’d also propose a compatibility mode which switches between the current behavior and the proposed such that users are not stuck between incompatible version without recourse.
If I have the time, I will produce a PR.https://foss.heptapod.net/mercurial/hg-git/-/issues/279hg 5.0: TypeError: __init__() got an unexpected keyword argument 'createopts'2019-12-19T04:51:25ZBitbucket Importerhg 5.0: TypeError: __init__() got an unexpected keyword argument 'createopts'*Created originally on Bitbucket by Anonymous*

I've used hg-git for years with [[https://github.com/biocommons/hgvs/](https://github.com/biocommons/hgvs/)](https://github.com/biocommons/hgvs). After a recent upgrade to ubuntu 19.04, and therefore to hg 4.8.2, with hg-git tip \(5d688b5cc153\), I'm seeing some disturbing behavior.
The first symptom was this:
```
$ hg tags
abort: 00changelog.i@f2ee08e6e70d: no node!
```
I recloned the repo and noticed that it was missing tags. The github repo has 107 tags. `hg tags` reports only 81. After debugging `hg tags`, I discovered that `localrepo.py:tags()` silently filters out tags that point to non-existent nodes. All of my tags were lost there.
A superficial view of `hg log` made it look like all changesets were accounted for. However, a more careful inspection showed that \*some\* changeset hashes had changed. Fortunately, I have the old repo still, so I can compare. For example, here's a recent set of changes on the old \(\`hgvs\`\) and newly-cloned \(\`hgvs-2\`\) repos:
```
snafu$ hg -R hgvs log -l 20 --template="{date|shortdate} {node|short} {rev} {desc|firstline}\n" --date "2019-04-01 to 2019-04-10"
snafu$ hg -R hgvs-2 log -l 20 --template="{date|shortdate} {node|short} {rev} {desc|firstline}\n" --date "2019-04-01 to 2019-04-10"
```
However, the changesets match earlier in the history:
```
snafu$ hg -R hgvs log -l 20 --template="{date|shortdate} {node|short} {rev} {desc|firstline}\n" --date "2016-04-01 to 2016-05-14"
```
That seems like a problem in many contexts, but especially for tags in .hgtags that are associated with an older hash. For example:
```
snafu$ fgrep 1.2.5 hgvs/.hgtags
093bf68e2c1da73b49c1eb9ef0c98d09735daf7f 1.2.5
summary: Added changelog for 1.2.5
snafu$ hg -R hgvs-2 log -r 093bf68e2c
abort: unknown revision '093bf68e2c'!
```
I thought this might be attributable to a particular version of `hg-git`. So, I checked out all of the versions that work on 4.8.2, then recloned the source repo and counted tags. This bug \(I think?\) appears before the changes that enable 4.8.2. I haven't tried backporting those changes.
Finally, I looked at backups and ascertained that my `hg-git` was c651bb6fcf33 \(0.8.12\) until Oct 2018, then 6ae26ba7b928 until last week. So, the above hgvs was cloned with one of those.https://foss.heptapod.net/mercurial/hg-git/-/issues/276Failed to push tags2019-12-19T04:51:25ZBitbucket ImporterFailed to push tags*Created originally on Bitbucket by [manhnt9 (Manh Nguyen Tien)](https://bitbucket.org/%7B96f54269-28b1-463c-94ad-a7a851e55251%7D/)*

I recently noticed a major problem with the 0.8.12 update where the changeset id for some of the imported changeset changed. Here's the tip of https://github.com/sebastien/wwwclient with 0.8.11:
```
and here's the tip with 0.8.12
The fact that the changeset id has changes makes it impossible to clone a repository that includes this repository as a submodule (ie. the .hgsubstate specifies revset 7b49b740e813, which does not exist in 0.8.12).
Steps to reproduce:
```
$ pip uninstall hg-git ; pip install --user 'hg-git >= 0.8.11,<0.8.12' ; hg clone git+ssh://git@github.com:sebastien/wwwclient.git wwwclient-0.8.11 ; pushd wwwclient-0.8.11 ; hg log | head ; popd

Hi,
I just created a git repo as described in the docs: git init and in the original mercurial repo "hg boomark hg" and a push from mercurial. I ended up with a git with 2branches: master and 'hg'. I set this as default in hgrc.
Now I'm trying to push a commit from hg:
```
#!text
$ hg out
comparing with git+ssh://git@github.com/xxx/yyy-fnd.git
searching for changes
changeset: 204:c9fde345a779
bookmark: hg
user: sandro
date: Tue Sep 04 23:30:42 2018 +0200
summary: Aggiunto README per hg-git
```
It seems ok but the i try to push:
```
#!text
$ hg push
pushing to git+ssh://git@github.com/xxx/yyy-fnd.git
searching for changes
abort: pushing refs/heads/hg overwrites c9fde345a779
```
Am I doing somethig wrong? Whe I 'hg pull", will it pull all branches?

I am unable to push to git because I have a tag called: Före RTF -> HTML
I get the error:
abort: Invalid argument: C:\Repos\Test\.hg\git\refs\tags\Före_RTF_->_HTML
Steps to reproduce:
hg init
<Add short textfile>
hg add
hg commit
hg tag "Före RTF -> HTML"
<Create directory "C:\GitRepos\Test">
git init --bare >"C:\GitRepos\Test"
hg push "C:\GitRepos\Test"
Error:
C:\Repos\Test>hg push "C:\GitRepos\Test"
pushing to C:\GitRepos\Test
abort: Invalid argument: C:\Repos\Test\.hg\git\refs\tags\Före_RTF_->_HTML
My theory is that there are some quotes missing or some other escaping that should have been done.
I am using hggit that came with Tortoise 4.1
