"Compact history graphs" are hard to understand

I do not know if this is is in fact a mercurial problem. However, I find that the "compact" history graphs are quite hard to understand.
In particular, they have a tendency to make the branches a revision depends on overlap, making it quite hard to see which are the parents of a given revision.
I do not know if there is something that can be done to make them more clear, but I'd like to mention the problem here. Perhaps you guys may come up with a better way to make the graphs more compact. Or perhaps I just do not understand how TortoiseHg is "compacting" the graphs, in which case understanding what TortoiseHg does would help.
