Upgrading from 2.1.4 to 2.2.1 seems to result in problems with explorer.exe process

Last week I upgraded from TortoiseHg v2.1.4 to v2.2.1. Under v2.1.4 I didn't have any problems. After upgrading to v2.2.1 I've noticed an extremely annoying problem.
When I add or commit a file to a repo on my local machine, the explorer.exe process hits 25% of the CPU for a couple of minutes. Every time. Instead of nearly instantaneous adds or commits, it's now taking a couple of minutes -- and during that time my taskbar is rendered inoperative. I need to wait for the operation to complete before I can start anything else.
Any ideas? I'm running WinXP SP3 on a 32-bit platform if that helps.
Thanks.
