py3: can't add new files to commit

When selecting previously untracked files to add to a commit, upon clicking the commit button, one gets a "nothing changed" popup message and the following error in the console output:
% hg add -- b'SoftwareDevice/__init__.py' b'SoftwareDevice/blacs_tabs.py' b'SoftwareDevice/blacs_workers.py' b'SoftwareDevice/labscript_devices.py' b'SoftwareDevice/register_classes.py' b'SoftwareDevice/testing/test.py' b'SoftwareDevice/utils.py'
b'SoftwareDevice/__init__.py': No such file or directory
b'SoftwareDevice/blacs_tabs.py': No such file or directory
b'SoftwareDevice/blacs_workers.py': No such file or directory
