<h1>XEmacs-related Packages and other interesting sites</h1>
<p>The XEmacs
<a href="ftp://ftp.xemacs.org/pub/">ftp site</a> now has a
<a href="ftp://ftp.xemacs.org/pub/xemacs/contrib/">contrib</a>
directory. This directory contains packages which are not
included with our distribution. Most likely they are here
because they require some porting.
<p>If you know of other links which look like they belong here, please
<A HREF="mailto:webmaster@xemacs.org">let us know</A> so that we can
make it available here.

<h1>XEmacs Download Locations</h1>
<p>Please try and pick a site that is networkologically close
to you. If you are mirroring XEmacs, or would like to, please
send an email to
<a href="mailto:webmaster@xemacs.org">webmaster@xemacs.org</a> so
that we can add your site to the list below and inform you
about our mirroring policy.
<p><b>To get started quickly:</b> Use the precompiled
executables that can be found in
the <code>binary-kits</code> directory in the mirrors below. Binary
kits are made by volunteers, so they are not available for all
supported platforms.
<menu>
<li><p><b>For Windows 95, 98, and NT:</b> Choose the "win32"
binary kit, unless you are already running Cygwin.
<li><p><b>For UNIX and Linux:</b> Binary kits are available for
some platforms, but you can always build from sources for the
vast number of supported platforms.
<li><p><b>For MacOS: </b> Use the <a
href="http://my.ispchannel.com/~pjarvis/xemacs.html">port of
XEmacs 19.14</a> to the MacOS.
</menu>
<p><b>Releases: </b>
<menu>
<li>The latest stable release is: <b>21.1.10</b>. It can
be found in the <code>current</code> directory in the mirrors
below. See the <a href="News/">NEWS files</a> for recent
changes.
<li>The latest developmental branch release can be found
in the <code>beta</code> directory in the mirrors below. Be
warned, beta releases can be unstable.
<li>Unreleased developmental versions can be found at <a
href="http://cvs.xemacs.org">cvs.xemacs.org</a>.
</menu>
<p>Some <a href="Install/index.html">installation instructions</a> are
available. <b>The XEmacs build process has changed</b> with the 21.1
and 21.2 releases; please consult the instructions if you are
upgrading from an older version!

Optional Libraries

<h1>Optional Libraries</h1>
<P>All external libraries used by XEmacs can be found at the XEmacs FTP site:
<A HREF="ftp://ftp.xemacs.org/pub/xemacs/aux/">ftp://ftp.xemacs.org/pub/xemacs/aux/</A>.
<P> The canonical locations (at the time of this writing) are
as follows:
<ul>
<li><b>JPEG</b>:
<A HREF="ftp://ftp.uu.net/graphics/jpeg/">ftp://ftp.uu.net/graphics/jpeg/</A>.
Version 6b is current.
<li><b>XPM</b>:
<A HREF="ftp://ftp.x.org/contrib/libraries/">ftp://ftp.x.org/contrib/libraries/</A>.
Version 3.4k is current.
(<b>Note:</b> Older versions of this package are known to cause XEmacs crashes.)
<li><b>TIFF</b>:
<A HREF="ftp://ftp.sgi.com/graphics/tiff/">ftp://ftp.sgi.com/graphics/tiff/</A>.
v3.4 is current. There is a HOWTO here.
<li><b>PNG</b>:
<A HREF="ftp://ftp.uu.net/graphics/png/">ftp://ftp.uu.net/graphics/png/</A>.
1.0.6 is current. XEmacs requires a fairly recent version to avoid using temporary files.
<li><b>Compface</b>:
<A HREF="ftp://ftp.cs.indiana.edu/pub/faces/compface/">
ftp://ftp.cs.indiana.edu/pub/faces/compface/</A>.
This library has been frozen for about 6 years, and is
distributed without version numbers. <b>It should be
compiled with the same options that X11 was compiled
with on your system</b>. The version of this library
at XEmacs.org includes the <TT>`xbm2xface.pl'</TT>
script, written by
<A HREF="mailto:stig@hackvan.com">stig@hackvan.com</A>,
which may be useful when generating your own xface.
<li><b>NAS</b>:
<A HREF="ftp://ftp.x.org/contrib/audio/nas/">ftp://ftp.x.org/contrib/audio/nas/</A>.

This directory contains binaries of useful programs and libraries for use
with XEmacs on Windows 9x/NT. Most of these are self-extracting executables.
This file last updated 2000-06-02.
cvs-1.10.exe: CVS binaries. CVS is the source-code control system
used to maintain the XEmacs sources. See http://cvs.xemacs.org for
info on using CVS.
ssh-1.2.14.exe: SSH binaries. SSH is the "Secure SHell", an RSH
replacement that provides strong encryption and is required if you get
write privileges to the XEmacs tree. (You do NOT need this if you just
want read-only access to the sources.)
png-1.0.3.exe: PNG libraries. A requirement for building XEmacs.
zlib-1.1.3.exe: ZLIB libraries. Required along with PNG.
xpm-3.4k.exe: XPM libraries. A requirement for building XEmacs.
jpeg-6b.exe: JPEG libraries. Optional for building XEmacs.
patch.2.5.exe.win32.gz: The PATCH program, for applying diffs.
