Problem with a merge commit

I didn't expect this MR to require a merge commit, but that one is on my side.
On the other hand, it is very worrying that this hg commit
actually tried to change the default branch, I'm actually glad it failed. And one wonders what the argument was, it should have been bytes
(name of the new default branch). This could be the one and same bug, or two bugs in cascade.
